605 Strong, latest resource in response to COVID-19 pandemic

Thousands of people across South Dakota are facing challenges unlike any they have ever experienced.

As needs continue to grow, the state in partnership with the 211 Helpline Center, has launched a free Crisis Counseling Program dedicated to helping people with COVID-19 resources and support.

The professional counselors are trained to provide proactive measures to help people deal with individual emotions and situations.

The counselors will provide step-by-step support for the situation, whether it be feelings of anxiety and depression, or getting basic needs met. The support specialist will direct you to the resources you may need to additional support in the community, like long-term attention from a mental health therapist.

Betsy Schuster, VP of Program Development of the Helpline Center, says,

“It’s really across the board of what services they may need and we can help to get them connected and provide that additional listening and support through this time.”

Since the launch of the program, the resource has been well received with support specialists making 70-100 follow up phone calls a week.

The program is a collaboration of the Department of Social Services, Lutheran Social Services and the Governors’ office to help reach people across the state.
