Rapid City, S.D. – In an announcement from SDDOT officials, it has been revealed that a significant construction project will impact traffic flow in the coming month. Commencing soon, the I-229 on-ramp traffic will undergo a detour route, redirecting vehicles through Benson Road, Cliff Avenue, and Rice Street.
Fortunately, Benson Road will maintain accessibility from Cliff Avenue to I-229 throughout the duration of the construction. Businesses along this route will remain open, ensuring continued access for patrons.
Motorists are advised to anticipate potential delays and plan alternate routes, particularly during peak travel hours throughout the I-229 and Benson Road construction project.
Safety remains paramount, and drivers are strongly encouraged to exercise caution and reduce speeds while navigating through the affected area. Traffic control measures will be in place to facilitate smooth flow and guide motorists around any closures.
The scope of the project encompasses the reconstruction of approximately one and a half miles of Benson Road and one mile of I-229 ramps. Key elements of the work include the construction of a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), structural enhancements, grading, concrete surfacing, installation of curb and gutter, storm sewer upgrades, lighting installation, signal implementation, as well as the installation of permanent signage and pavement markings.
T&R Contracting, based in Sioux Falls, SD, has been designated as the prime contractor for this substantial $34.3 million project. With an eye toward completion, the target date for finalizing all aspects of the project is set for Friday, June 27, 2025.
